Chulu West Peak Climbing
A 21-day climb to Chulu West (6,419m) above the Manang valley, a remote, non-technical snow peak combined with a full Annapurna Circuit crossing over Thorong La Pass.
- Duration 21 Days
- Difficulty Strenuous
- Group Size 12 People
- Max Altitude 6419m
- Region Annapurna
Overview
Chulu West (6,419m) rises above the Manang valley with sweeping views across Annapurna II, III, and IV, Gangapurna, Glacier Dome, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho Peak, and Manaslu. Where its neighbor Chulu East is often compared to Island Peak in accessibility, Chulu West is the more remote option — comparable to Mera Peak in character — with no serious technical difficulty on the standard route to the summit.
The approach follows the classic Annapurna Circuit trail up the Marsyangdi valley through Chame, Pisang, and Manang, before branching toward Chulu West Base Camp. Above Base Camp, some sections of steep, loose rock require fixed ropes, but the route is otherwise mostly a straightforward snow climb. After the summit, the itinerary rejoins the circuit to cross Thorong La Pass and descend the Kali Gandaki valley toward Pokhara.
Because the route involves sections of loose rock and fixed-rope climbing above Base Camp, climbers should have prior experience with ice axe and crampon use, ascending and descending fixed lines, and general rock/ice climbing technique. Good physical fitness, some hill-walking or base camp trekking background, and basic mountaineering knowledge are expected before booking a 6,000m peak of this kind.

Essential Information
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most stable conditions for both the Chulu West summit push and the Thorong La Pass crossing.
Chulu West has no serious technical difficulty on its standard route — mostly a straightforward snow climb — though a section of steep, loose rock above Base Camp requires fixed ropes. Climbers should have prior experience with ice axe and crampon use, moving on fixed lines, and general rock/ice climbing technique, along with good physical fitness and some hill-trekking background.
Hotel accommodation in Kathmandu (category as requested, tourist to 5-star) and one night in Pokhara. Teahouse accommodation along the trekking sections, with tented camping at Chulu West Base Camp and the higher camps for the climbing period.
Full board meals included throughout — breakfast, lunch, and dinner with tea/coffee during the trek, with high-altitude nutrition packages and gas stoves provided at the higher camps.
- Chulu West Peak Climbing Permit: NMA-issued climbing royalty and permit, priced by season, per climber
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP): Required for the Annapurna Circuit sections of the route
- TIMS Card: Trekkers' Information Management System card, issued by TAAN
- Climbing hardware: Harness, crampons, ice axe, and ascender for the fixed-rope section and snow climbing
- Trekking poles: Recommended for the long Thorong La descent to Muktinath
- Headlamp: Essential for the pre-dawn summit push and the Thorong La crossing
- Down jacket: Insulated jacket plus thermal base layers and warm gloves
- Mountaineering boots: Insulated, crampon-compatible boots for the summit push
- Personal kit: Personal medicines, altitude medication as advised by a doctor, sunscreen, and toiletries
- Sleeping bag: Cold-rated bag for base camp and higher camps
Chulu West's summit at 6,419m and Thorong La Pass at 5,416m are both major altitude milestones on this trip. Watch for headache, nausea, and dizziness as early symptoms of altitude sickness, and take altitude medication only as advised by a doctor.
